Napolizz Pizza, Tanjong Pagar: Authentic Italian cuisine with crazy promotions every day of the week

Have you noticed how thin crust pizzas have exploded in popularity over the past decade or so? With a higher topping-to-crust ratio, these pizzas pack more flavour into each bite and less of the carbs and calories of bread. Napolizz Pizza has taken that simple, healthy concept and created a menu of absolutely divine pizzas around it.

Established in 2010, the mini pizza chain started as a small takeaway place. I remember enjoying pizza there soon after it opened and wishing they would adopt a restaurant concept so I could sit down and enjoy the fare at my leisure. 12 years later, Napolizz has grown to 2 dine-in and 3 takeaway/delivery outlets, so I got my wish!

When I spoke to the owner, Negen about the change, he revealed that it was indeed a decision made in response to customer feedback. Negen is a veteran of the Italian restaurant scene, having worked as chef at a slew of them before he branched off on his own.

In creating a gathering space for family and friends, he has one with the cosy approach. The spacious restaurant at Anson House was bathed in warm orange lighting when I visited, and the decor was pleasant and inviting. We chose to sit inside the spacious premises because of the humidity but the outdoor seating would be a good option on cooler days.

The real difference, though, was made by the staff. They were extremely attentive and friendly, setting the stage for a wonderful lunch.

What I tried

We started with the 6 pcs Chicken Wings (S$10.50) and I loved the incredibly rough breaded texture. The star of this dish was the homemade BBQ sauce that made the chicken flavour pop.

The other appetiser we chose was the Spicy Olives 100g (S$7) which made for an interesting contrast.

Wonderfully presented, the Caprese (S$12) salad of sliced buffalo mozzarella (which was pleasurably grainy), fresh tomatoes, basil and pesto sauce was a delight, especially with some of the spicy olives from the appetiser.

For my Main, I chose Gamberoni Alla Padella (S$29). The gigantic King Prawns are cooked in mustard and cream, and served with lemon and mixed salad.

The prawns were very succulent and the tang of fresh lemon brought out the highlights of their flavour.

Since the portions were so huge, we went for a split 50-50 pizza to try more of the flavours. Half was the May special in pizzas, Pizza Emma (S$30). It is topped with mozzarella, cream, bacon, sliced potatoes, onions and Italian parsley.

The other half was Pizza Salmone Funghi Pesto (S$23), which gives you mozzarella, tomato sauce, smoked salmon, mixed mushrooms and pesto as toppings.

I liked both but the monthly special a little bit more. It was not very cheesy, giving the other toppings room to breathe and access my taste buds.

pasta in baking sheet

Our choice of pasta was the monthly special Spaghetti al Cartoccio, which translates as ‘spaghetti in parchment’ alluding to the way it is cooked. It begins with a normal preparation but the dish is then wrapped in special paper and… baked!

All the flavours from the garlic, chilli, basil, prawn, squid, mussels, scallops and white wine simmer in that enclosed space, mixing and melding into a heavenly concoction. Definitely try this!

Anyone who knows me would have predicted I had the tiramisu for dessert. But I also had the lava cake so you’re only half right. Hah!

Napolizz does a truly wonderful tiramisu, not too much cream and in the right portion size. It is probably the second-best tiramisu I have tried in Singapore. And that says a lot!

Promotions Galore

It’s a great time to visit a Napolizz restaurant because they’re going all out with their dine-in promotions. Come on a Wednesday evening to take full advantage of Ladies Night. With live performances back with an official green light, Napolizz hosts a live band on Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends.

If you really want to max out your dollar, my advice is to go for the delivery combos. Combo A (S$32) includes 1 pizza, 1 salad, 1 garlic bread and 1 drink (Coke or Sprite 1.5 litre). Combo B (S$64) comes with 2 pizzas, 1 salad, 1 pasta, 1 garlic bread and 1 drink (Coke or Sprite 1.5 litre). Combo B will feed a group of 6 people for less than S$11 each, which I think is really great.

There are daily specials as well. On Mondays, all salads are reduced to just S$10. Tuesdays will get you 50% off your second pizza and that same offer is extended to pastas on Wednesday. On Thursdays, you can get a Lasagna or Parmigiana for just S$10++. Place an order for above S$50 on Fridays and get a 4 pcs Chicken Wing set free.

On Saturdays and Sundays, purchase any bottle of wine (except house pours) and get a free Margherita Pizza (otherwise S$19).

With their dine-in restaurants proving to be in such high demand, Napolizz has expanded its beverage menu to suit.

Drinkers should take full advantage of their daily Happy Hour beer promotion. It is available from 11am to 8pm every day. Napolizz is currently running a draught beer promotion. One pint of Paulaner Munich Hell costs just S$8, down from the usual S$12.50. A pint of Paulaner Munich Dunkel Dark Lager will set you back just S$10++ instead of the normal price of S$12.90.

Final thoughts

Napolizz was a much needed 5-star experience for me. It was no surprise considering the buzz that the food was great, but their service made the lunch just perfect. Takeaway is great but I encourage you to make the trip down to their dine-in restaurants at Grandstand and Anson House to best soak in the authentic Italian cuisine!
