Beautycon returns this September under Essence Ventures
Beautycon, a beauty festival likened as the "Super Bowl of beauty," returns Sept. 16-17 in Los Angeles after the festival closed in 2021 due to financial problems. The festival's assets were acquired by Essence Ventures, a Black-owned private equity firm which also owns Essence, in May 2021. "We will continue to play an active role in moving the definition of beauty forward and empowering consumers to define beauty on their own terms," Erika Bennett, CMO of Essence Ventures, told Vogue Business. {Vogue Business/paywalled}

Law Roach opens up to Mel Ottenberg for Interview
Law Roach, (fomer?) celebrity stylist and the brains behind many iconic Zendaya fashion moments, shocked the fashion world in March when he posted that he is retiring. Roach stars in a glamorous photo shoot and talks candidly with Interview Editor-in-Chief Mel Ottenberg about what led to that decision and his next steps in the fashion world. Roach told Ottenberg, "We suffer for success. But to what end? I've been in so many situations where I'm not being treated right, but this means so much, not just for me, but for other people. I have the burden of being the first Black person in this industry to get to a certain level. So in my mind, I'm always thinking about representation and who's motivated by me." {Interview}

AI this, AI that. AI seems to be everywhere these days, and it's already being used in the beauty industry (think virtual try-ons for nail polish or foundation shade matching), but beauty retailers have ideas for AI's enduring impact on the industry. Some see AI as a potential tool for growth and personalization, while others like NakedPoppy and Ulta Beauty regularly use AI to improve customer experiences. {Beauty Independent/paywalled}
