Mul Gogi Korean BBQ: Singapore’s first water-aged meat & amazing army stew in Tanjong Pagar

Singapore has no shortage of Korean BBQ restaurants — you’ll probably find a new KBBQ spot wherever you go in this country. However, Mul Gogi Korean BBQ stands out from the crowd due to its unique method of ageing its meats.

The restaurant offers plenty of spacious seats for diners to get together and feast on delicious Korean dishes. If you’re worried about smelling like meat after having KBBQ, not to worry, for each of Mul Gogi Korean BBQ’s tables comes equipped with powerful smoke exhausts to suck up the smoke emitted from the grilling.

What makes Mul Gogi Korean BBQ stand out from the crowd is the fact that it is Singapore’s first restaurant to use the water-ageing technique, which allows the meat to become more tender. You’ll spot water tanks located at the back of the restaurant with packets of sealed meat floating within!

What I tried at Mul Gogi Korean BBQ

Mul Gogi Korean BBQ offers 4 BBQ sets comprising different types of meats and cuts. The first option we tried was Set A (S$83), which comes with pork belly, pork collar and pork jowl, plus a huge pot of Fish Cake Shabu Shabu.

Each cut of meat was thick with a good ratio of meat to fat. The platter also included 2 pieces of mushrooms to act as a mini palate cleanser.

As the meats sizzled on the grill, they released a tantalising aroma. I was enticed by how juicy all 3 cuts of pork were.

My favourite was the pork belly, which consisted of a good amount of meat and fat. The fatty portions melted in my mouth beautifully, while the meaty parts were delightfully tender and chewy.

The pork jowl and pork collar were similarly delicious, each being super juicy and chewy without any excessive toughness.

To make the dish even more worth it, Mul Gogi Korean BBQ’s sets come with a Fish Cake Shabu Shabu, which contains a huge variety of ingredients, including clams, fish balls, crab sticks, mushrooms, tofu and vegetables. The refreshing clear broth is the perfect palate cleanser for the rich pork meat, and the large amount of ingredients make for a very filling meal.

If you’re more inclined towards beef, opt for Mul Gogi Korean BBQ’s Set D (S$133), consisting of ribeye, boneless beef ribs, beef short ribs and Fish Cake Shabu Shabu

Like the pork, Mul Gogi Korean BBQ’s beef dishes were juicy and tantalising. I loved watching as they sizzled away on the grill, emitting a tasty fragrance.

The ribeye was thick and slightly chewy, all while maintaining a gorgeous tenderness and nice beefiness. The boneless beef ribs were of a slightly thinner cut, but were equally as succulent and delicious.

The beef short ribs had the sweetest and smokiest aroma out of the 3 cuts of beef. I loved how soft each piece was, and the slightly charred fragrance elevated the umami-ness of the meat.

Looking to up your KBBQ game? You definitely should get Mul Gogi Korean BBQ’s Premium Mul Gogi (S$56), a platter of sliced whole beef ribs with bone.

Compared to the other cuts of meat, the Premium Mul Gogi had a significantly higher ratio of fat in each slice, with a beautiful marbled appearance.

My teeth easily sank into the moist and juicy beef ribs. Each bite was an explosion of buttery flavours — the marbling was simply divine!

In true KBBQ style, you can also wrap your grilled meats in lettuce to create refreshing lettuce wraps. We topped our wrap with kimchi and a clove of garlic — the butteriness of the meat balanced out well with the crisp lettuce and piquant kimchi

No Korean restaurant is complete without an Army Stew (S$43)! Mul Gogi Korean BBQ’s Army Stew was enormous, and came filled with plenty of tofu, spam, sausages and vegetables.

We let the stew cook for a while and later mixed it up to coat each ingredient in the glorious vibrant red soup beneath.

The spicy, savoury soup paired perfectly with the large assortment of ingredients in the Army Stew. It was refreshing yet so robust in flavour, and the wide selection of toppings offered a multitude of textures.

Plus, the huge size of the Army Stew justify its price point. Though the menu discloses that it is suitable for 2 to 3 pax, the gigantic pot could easily be split among larger groups, especially if you are getting other dishes or BBQ meats during your meal.

Final thoughts

I was thoroughly impressed with the dishes at Mul Gogi Korean BBQ. Every one of their meats were succulent and juicy, and their Army Stew was glorious too. Even their assortment of banchan exceeded my expectations. Their kimchi was one of the best I’ve had in Singapore!

With its relatively affordable prices, generous portions and high quality dishes, Mul Gogi Korean BBQ is definitely on my radar the next time I’m in search of a good KBBQ spot.

Expected damage: S$26 – S$70 per pax
