Mr Grumpy Nasi Ayam: “Rudest” nasi ayam goreng seller’s new Holland Drive outlet

Infamously known as Singapore’s “rudest” nasi ayam goreng seller, Shafiie has once again expanded his fried chicken rice empire with the newly-opened Mr Grumpy Nasi Ayam at Holland Drive.

Following his first Toa Payoh branch, this is the second outlet under the aptly befitting “Mr Grumpy” name.

Mr Grumpy Nasi Ayam: Storefront

The store owner’s notoriety stems from his strict rules at the original Lucky Plaza branch (Fiie’s Cafe), which include ordering before grabbing a seat and NOT hogging seats during peak hours. The result of failing to comply with these rules? Risk facing a scolding from Shafiie who was, fun fact, a bouncer for 8 years.

Reflecting Mr Grumpy Nasi Ayam’s title of the #1 Nasi Ayam Goreng In Town, customers are unfazed by Shafiie’s no-nonsense demeanour and one-star reviews.

Among the many who have tried the iconic store is my trusty colleague Isabelle, who exclaimed that she “almost shed a tear” as their fried chicken was far superior to any other fast food chain’s.

Bagus anot? Let’s find out.

Although it is quieter than other outlets on weekends, the Holland Drive branch promises the same tantalising spread as its Toa Payoh counterpart.

Unlike the Lucky Plaza outlet though, both Mr Grumpy outlets do not offer combo sets and solely focus on its Signature Nasi Ayam (S$6.50). Along with choices of Additional Rice (S$1) and Additional Chicken (S$5), you may also opt for some savoury a la carte Sides (S$1 each) like sambal hotdogs, quail eggs or bergedil to personalise your meal.

Marinated with Shafiie’s secret ayam goreng family recipe, the golden-fried chicken boasts a crunchy exterior and juicy interior. Served with slices of refreshing cucumber and a side of punchy sambal, the fragrant chicken rice is cooked in chicken fat and topped with crispy batter crumbs! What’s more, expect a sapid yet comforting bowl of soto ayam-style broth too.

Sedap lah.

Akin to his store’s ayam goreng, beyond Safiie’s gruff facade is a filial son. Before passing over the reins to Safiie, his mother founded Fiie’s Cafe (formerly named As-Shifaa Cafe) more than 20 years ago. It was also where he started helping his mother when he was a teen. Does this change your perception of him?

If not, I guess it’s time to find out for yourself.
