Movies Not to Miss: October 2019

While there are plenty of horror titles to make October a scary month for Halloween, it is good to know that there are plenty more titles for moviegoers who don't enjoy being stuck in the horror mould.
Beside some sequels and beloved reboots, some of the festival darlings are also making their way here, which would be a rare opportunity to see how well they will do come Oscar season next year.

If there was one comicbook movie to beat the epicness that is "Avengers: Endgame" this year, it could the next best comicbook movie that challenges the best villain since "The Dark Knight". Premiered at the recent Toronto International Film Festival and not in any way tied with the DC Expanded Universe, "Joker" has already received the critical acclaim to be one of the best comic book movies to re-examine the role of the genre in the mainstream, but will general audiences agree? Either way, we are already more than excited to see Joaquin Phoenix making his comicbook entry with a character that deserves to be given his method acting treatment, and we hope that director Todd Phillips brings out a performance that could be gut-wrenching and heartbreaking at the same time to humanise a villain that is as iconic as its heroes.

Heroic and damaged pilot stories might have started thanks to Denzel Washington, but if you thought biopics of that nature had landed with 2016's "Sully" with Tom Hanks, China is about to remind the world again. Based on the emergency landing of the Sichuan Airlines flight in 2018 that saved over 100 lives, Zhang Hanyu takes the titular role in this gripping re-enactment that compiles all your fears of flying, directed by Andrew Lau.

As a government assassin is starting to age, Henry Bogan is being forcefully retired to be replaced by another government assassin. However, what Bogan didn't expect is that he is being retired by a clone of his younger self. Pitched and bought as early as the late 90s (with a premise that speaks as a product of its time), "Gemini Man" was stuck in development hell because there wasn't the right technology to create a younger clone of an actor. Now with the technology to create a double and younger Will Smith (that is not a de-aged double), Ang Lee once again steps into the forefront of cinematic technology since "Life of Pi" to take the reins of this Will Smith vehicle. While Will Smith is no John Wick, we are still excited all the same for Smith to be back in action shape before we see him again in next "Bad Boys".

As news of Aurora accepting a marriage proposal from Prince Philip reaches Maleficent, it is not an occasion of happy matrimony when the prince's mother plans to use it to divide humans and families forever. If there is one formula that hasn't been a hit-or-miss in its line of live action adaptations is the one that centers on its classic villains. After embodying the role in 2014, Angelina Jolie gloriously returns to reprise her role as the magnificent sorceress, alongside Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville to their respective roles, while also introducing Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ed Skrein and Michelle Pfeiffer into the fairy tale world. Harris Dickinson will be replacing Brenton Thwaites as the new Prince Philip, with Joachim Rønning taking over the director's chair.

Taking place 27 years later, a new timeline branches from the end of "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" as the robots of SkyNet continue sending new assassins to ensure the dark end of mankind. As muddled as the Terminator timeline has become (and once again discarding movies from the cannon), "Terminator: Dark Fate" is looking to be going back to basics. Starting with the original cast of Linda Hamilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Edward Furlong to reprise their roles which they haven't in the last 28 years, and also bringing franchise creator James Cameron on board to hash out a 'true' sequel to "Judgment Day". All eyes are once again on seeing if "Dark Fate" could revive an already dying franchise, or would put an end to it, just as another 80s action franchise that just did last month.

For another not so old franchise that is making a reunion comeback, the 10-year gap between "Zombieland" and "Zombieland: Double Tap" might be a more welcomed. Having little trouble in getting back the original cast which has since shoot to fame and stardom (with a few Oscar wins in between), Ruben Fleischer returns to direct his family of misfits consisting of Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin and Bill Murray, as they travel into the American heartland where a new breed of threats are emerging. Always adding to the fun of "Zombieland" is the high profile cast that the misfits run into, this time being Rosario Dawson, Zoey Deutch, Luke Wilson and Dan Aykroyd.

We may not have suggested any horror movie on this list so far, but that doesn't mean there isn't a perfect Halloween movie. Brought back from the grave to get a face-lift for the 21st century, the Addams move to sunny New Jersey and have to contend with a reality TV host and a visit from the extended family. The new Addams will be voiced by a new cast which has Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, and Nick Kroll, and hopefully we will have a new franchise to look forward to other than "Hotel Transylvania".
