This Mountain Home Has an Epic Laundry Room That'd Make You Look Forward to Doing Laundry
The first thing greeting visitors to Jacey Prupas and Patrick Leverty’s Reno home is a jewel box. Or, at least, this was the effect designer Lori Paranjape had in mind when she chose to place an emerald green sideboard at the center of the foyer, alongside inlaid wood floors and an angular hanging light fixture resembling a gemstone. “We poured a lot of energy into this space,” Paranjape says. “We wanted to introduce people to the home in a beautiful way.”
It’s a fitting opening statement. The rest of the 5,000-square-foot space-which Prupas and Leverty share with their 10-year-old daughter, eight-year-old son, and two golden retrievers-conveys a similar elegance. Its expansive main room, for starters, encompasses a cozy living area, anchored by an oversized black velvet sofa; an airy formal dining area complete with adjoining bar; and the pièce de résistance: a big, bright kitchen clad in sleek custom cabinetry and flooded with natural light.
The space’s crisp colors and clean lines represent a dramatic departure from the rustic, mountain home aesthetic that’s popular in the Reno area, but that’s precisely what the couple hoped for. “That’s why we connected,” says Nashville-based Paranjape, who signed on to the project in 2016, before construction on the house had begun. “They were trying to get away from the heavy timbers and the dark colors, and go for something cleaner.”
Functionality was equally important. Generous storage, a variety of seating options, and a selection of child-proof fabrics and materials were incorporated into the design, with even the humblest of household chores afforded special attention: A laundry room, accented in a rich forest green, contains a broom closet, linen storage, a gift-wrapping station, and plenty of surfaces for the kids to do crafts.
It’s the home’s design philosophy in a nutshell. “Every detail is so thoughtful, but also so approachable. It looks nice,” Prupas says, “but we can still live in it.”
