Our Most Viral Recipe Videos This Year

Millions of views later, here are the top 10.

It's that time of year—no, not Christmas, but time for all the end-of-year wrap-ups. The time we look back on the year and see which moments, trends, and recipes defined the year. So many of the biggest trends of 2023 started on social media, so it's only natural that we turn to our own feeds to see which videos came out on top. From the Allrecipes-ified version of the upside-down pastry trend to an ingenious donut hack and the infamous Horrible Hand, these were the top 10 thumb-stopping videos on our Instagram and TikTok accounts in 2023.

10. Uncrustables Donuts

Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. And this genius one that turns Uncrustables into the easiest peanut butter- and jelly-filled donuts blew our minds. It turns out the nostalgic lunchtime favorite is actually quite versatile and the base for lots of fun snacks, as social media has shown us time and time again. Somebody tell Travis Kelce.

9. Cowboy Butter

Here's an example of a recipe that tastes as good as it looks. Cowboy food was everywhere this year, but especially this dip-able, dunk-able, spreadable Cowboy Butter. This video captured our audiences, racking up over 2 million views on TikTok and over nearly 8 million views on Instagram. One watch and you'll be smitten, too—then you'll be running to your kitchen to gather the ingredients to make it.

8. Sweet Bacon Crackers

Sweet, savory, and positively swipe-stopping, the name says it all. These little bacon bites left Allrecipes Senior Producer Nicole McLaughlin (who—it bears mentioning—stars in the majority of these videos) speechless. With just a handful of ingredients you probably have on hand, what's stopping you from making them?

7. Upside Down Hot Dog Pastry

Upside-down puff pastries were all over social media feeds this year. And while we published sweet and savory versions, none took off the way this one did. A cross between an upside-down pastry and a pig-in-a-blanket, this "recipe" from Nicole McLaughlin is totally genius. All you need is premade puff pastry, hot dogs (sliced down the middle), and a little Parmesan cheese. Then get ready for the most decadent hot dog of your life.

6. “Horrible Hand” Ham and Cheese Board

Chef John’s genius knows no bounds, especially when it comes to creative Halloween recipes. And this year he whipped up something particularly brilliant—and horrifying. An absolutely eye-catching display for ham and cheese, the video demonstrating just how to mold your own "horrible hand" went viral, garnering over 5 million views on Instagram. We think it's the hot sauce "blood" that really sealed the deal.

5. Rotel Tacos

Sitting at almost 7 million Instagram views and 4.5 million on TikTok, these tacos are what we call a winner-winner weeknight dinner. Inspired by your favorite 3-ingredient cheese dip, but made heartier for dinnertime, there's nothing not to like about this recipe. And apparently, a lot of you agree.

4. Crunchwrap Casserole

What happens when you turn a fourth meal favorite into a comforting casserole? A viral sensation. That was certainly the case with this Crunchwrap-inspired dish, which even spawned another spinoff recipe, the equally delicious Big Mac Casserole. Which begs the question—what can't you "casserole?"

3. DIY Pizza Rolls

Clocking in at 9.5 million views on Instagram, we have a hack that blew our team's minds, and millions more as well. Why reserve your ice tray for just ice? Social media has taught us it can be used for sushi, mini pancakes, and a darn good version of those pizza rolls you remember from childhood. All you need is store-bought pizza dough, pizza sauce, shredded cheese, and a little optional Italian seasoning for the tops. These make us wish we were kids again, if not just to have them as an after school snack.

2. No-Bake Pecan Pie Dip

Who needs the fuss and mess of a pecan pie when you can get the same comfort (if not more) in dip form? This quickly rose the ranks around Thanksgiving, racking up over 16 million views on Instagram Reels. We even took one commenter's suggestion and put the topping over baked Brie, because we just couldn't get enough of this recipe.

1. Country Apple Dumplings

Without further ado, our most-watched video on both Instagram and TikTok in 2023 was none other than Country Apple Dumplings, Mountain Dew and all. That's right, a splash of lemon-lime soda—like Mountain Dew—is the secret ingredient to the grandma-approved apple dessert that captured everyone's attention this fall. With a whopping 21.5 million views on Instagram and 7.5 million on TikTok (and growing!), this may very well be our most viral video of all time.

And what's more, the recipe itself can back the video up. In fact, it's one of Allrecipes' most top-rated apple desserts, with thousands of five-star reviews. So really, even if you're skeptical of doing the Dew, this is one recipe you should try before the year comes to a close.
