From the beaches of Florida to the deserts of Arizona to the shorelines of Maryland, every region of the U.S. puts its own spin on Christmas decorating. It's fascinating to see which holiday decor in particular is favored by each state.

Lombardo Homes, a Michigan-based home construction company, recently released the most popular Christmas decorations by state in 2024. They compiled these findings with the help of Google Trends data to discover the most searched-for Christmas decor in every state—and the results just might surprise you.

The Overall Most Popular Christmas Decorations

There were some overwhelming favorites in their nationwide findings. The Christmas tree came out as the winner for the fourth year in a row, but snowflakes now come in at number two—they didn’t even make it into the top 10 last year and are more popular now.

And then there were some results that surprised us. In Alaska, you’d think that a decoration like a snowflake or snowman would be the favorite since they have so much snow, but actually, it’s the sweet and cheerful candy cane. And although Florida has plenty of palm trees to decorate, they still prefer evergreen Christmas trees as their top decoration.

Some decorations were favorites among only a few states—for example, reindeer are preferred in only Ohio and Illinois and nutcrackers come out on top in just Wyoming and Louisiana. There were also a couple of old-school decorations that still made it onto the list. You’d think that mistletoe and window candles are favorites from bygone eras, but they actually continue to be quite popular—in fact, mistletoe was ranked number four overall nationwide.

No matter if your favorite decorations made the list or not, at least you’re in the holiday spirit, and at the end of the day, that’s all that really matters. But it’s always interesting to see what’s popular out there, especially from year to year.
