This New Mirror Hotel in Iceland Has 'Invisible' Houses — Each With a Sauna, Hot Tub, and Iconic Mountain Views
ÖÖD Hekla Horizon is bringing seven new mirrored homes to the south of Iceland.
Iceland continues to be a popular destination for travelers. The tiny island nation had a record-breaking year for tourism in 2024, welcoming nearly 2.4 million visitors. And now, there's one more reason to plan your visit in 2025 to see it all for yourself.
In December, ÖÖD Hekla Horizon, a new luxury getaway, unveiled its accommodations near the Hekla Volcano in the south of the country. The unique stay perfectly blends high-end features with Iceland's famed, rugged natural surroundings.
The property includes seven mirrored houses — three signature houses, two extended mirror homes, and two "monolith" mirror houses — meant to look invisible in the landscape, ensuring unobstructed views for a picture-perfect stay. All of the homes include access to lavish amenities like a hot tub and sauna (some of the homes include private versions of each), and the property is even home to a "Northern Lights Lounge," so you can see the nighttime phenomenon in total comfort.
“From the very beginning, we’ve focused on doing things differently," Andreas Tiik, who co-founded ÖÖD with his brother Jaak, along with their local Icelandic partners, Arnar Jónsson and Ingibjörg Jakobsdóttir, shared in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure. "Our goal with ÖÖD Hekla Horizon was to create the most remarkable Northern Lights hotel, where guests can experience the auroras and the iconic Mount Hekla from their beds, a hot tub, or our all-glass Northern Lights Lounge. This is the ultimate ÖÖDventure — reimagining hospitality, allowing nature to be the star.”
This opening, the team added, coincides with prime Northern Lights viewing, as the solar activity that sends those particles all the way to Earth to light up the sky is expected to reach an 11-year peak between now and mid-2025.
“We are so proud to be part of the ÖÖD Hekla Horizon project," Jónsson added. "Our goal is to create a place where visitors can experience Iceland’s power and beauty while we connect with nature and ourselves.”
While each of the homes is cozy enough to spend your entire vacation in, the team notes that there are plenty of places nearby worthy of exploration, including hiking through the volcanic landscapes near Mount Hekla, driving to the highlands, and taking a day trip to some of Iceland's famed waterfalls like Háifoss, Seljalandsfoss, and Skógafoss.
If you fall in love with this experience, you could always keep the good times going by visiting ÖÖD Hötels' other properties. The company has mirrored homes dotting the global map, including locations in Estonia, Finland, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. See them all at oodhotels.com, and book your stay at its Iceland property starting Feb. 1.
