Mini unveils its first plug-in hybrid model
Mini has lifted the lid on its second-generation Countryman. As well as being the largest model in the brand's history, it's above all the first Mini that's available in a plug-in hybrid version.
The hybrid Mini Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 has a 136hp three-cylinder engine twinned with an 88hp electric motor for a total power of 224hp. In electric mode, this four-wheel-drive vehicle has a range of 40km (25 miles) and a top speed of 125km/h (78 mph). It has an average fuel consumption of 2.1l/100km on the standard European test cycle and CO2 emissions equivalent to 49g/km.
Alongside this plug-in hybrid version, the Mini Countryman will land with four other engine options (two gasoline, two diesel) and all models have the latest Mini TwinPower Turbo technology.
The new Countryman gains 20cm in length and has five seats that promise a little extra comfort. The most striking new features include touchless opening and closing of the tailgate, various touchscreen controls and an onboard personal assistant (Mini Connected App).
This new-generation Mini will premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show, which runs November 18 to 27. It's expected in European dealerships early in 2017. The plug-in hybrid version will follow later in the year. Mini could even have a fully electric model on the market by 2020.
