Micro Bakery: Freshly made bread & brunch located within historical landmark The Red House
Social media is all about aesthetic places, no matter whether it’s on eateries or places full of memories. What if I told you that Micro Bakery in Katong was both? Located in The Red House, which once housed the historically renowned Katong Bakery & Confectionery Company, Micro Bakery would be a great place to visit for tasty brunch and a walk down memory lane.
When a baker friend raved about Micro Bakery’s amazing sourdough, I was easily sold. An expert would be able to give the best advice, would they not? I had never tried any bakes from this bakery despite all the popularity of their breads, so my curiosity was ignited.
With that bold colour scheme, Micro Bakery’s exterior is extremely difficult to miss. It truly sets them apart from the neutrally painted shophouses along the row. Despite that, the place somehow feels right and not at all out of the blue.
For the curious folks, the building had housed Katong Bakery & Confectionery, which was a popular breakfast haunt for Easties until 2003. Closing due to being structurally unstable, The Red House underwent restoration to house the Micro Bakery we see today.
Unlike its exterior, the inside of Micro Bakery was rather modernised. Personally, I have a weakness for brick walls, which made the bakery all the more stylish. Even with all the contemporary fixtures, I adored how the place stayed true to the heritage, adorning Peranakan tiles.
Environment wise, it was indeed on the warmer side thanks to the open doors. Those afraid of humidity, it would be a clever move to choose seating underneath a fan. I would also mention that Micro Bakery’s seating arrangement caters to small groups of 2, so do include that into your plans!
What I tried at Micro Bakery
Of course, I had to try a brunch option, considering how Micro Bakery’s kitchen is only exclusively open 5 days a week and closes at 3.30pm. After a long indecisive thought process, I had settled for the Green Goddess Avocado Tartine (S$19).
Although, the Grilled Flatbread with Mushroom (S$18) almost convinced me with its tempting aroma wafting through the cafe.
What I loved most was the soft texture of the sourdough, which was a clear indicator that the bread was freshly baked. With little force, my knife practically glided through the bread. The sour hits that sweet spot, not being overwhelming yet still there to be appreciated.
The spices from the pistachio dukkah complemented the creaminess of the avocado spread so well that I had practically coated it with each bite. Take that with the leaking egg yolk and I promise you will not regret it.
I thoroughly inhaled everything on my plate, enjoying how the nutty flavours of both the avocado and the pistachio went together. Personally, the tartine tasted almost Mediterranean, giving a rather distinctive taste profile.
Micro Bakery has specialties every significant season, with a prime example being the Hot Cross Bun for Easter. Packed full of dried fruits — apricots, orange peel and blackcurrants, the bun made for a nutritious morning snack.
Surprisingly, the baked goods were not sweet in the slightest. Rather, it gave a toasty cinnamon-y feel, which I later found out was from the rum in the dough.
With iced coffee as the root of my existence, ordering an Iced Latte (S$6.50) was a no-brainer for me. The espresso shot had a good touch of acidity and bitterness, making for a wonderful wake up call.
Micro Bakery’s eco-friendly vibes were completely on point, opting to use a cotton coaster and paper straw. I am sure those who are environmentally aware would appreciate this sentiment. However, the amount of beverages is rather small for its price point.
Final thoughts
Micro Bakery’s ambience makes for a dream place to just relax and unwind, lulling to the natural white noise from the quiet chit-chat in the background. With no-nonsense brunch food, it’s easy to see why Micro has its fantastic reputation.
However, as the prices here are in the higher range, I may only be able to dine here as a once-in-a-while splurge.
Expected damage: S$10.50 – S$35 per pax
