Local actress and director Michelle Chong has taken home the Best Director award for ‘Lulu The Movie’ at the Canada International Film Festival 2017, beating out films from over 90 countries around the world.

“This is my first Best Director award, and it comes from an “Ang Moh” country no less! And I didn’t even have to pay for it!” Chong said in a statement released on Friday (17 March).

“It’s moving to me that the Canadians understand and appreciate the style and humour of the movie. Lulu love Canada! Lulu love Justin Trudeau!”

‘Lulu The Movie’ is the third film Chong has written, directed and produced, after 2011’s ‘Already Famous’ and 2013’s ‘3 Peas in a Pod’. It was released on 24 Nov, 2016, and earned over $2 million at the box office.

‘Already Famous’ also was previously selected as Singapore’s entry to the Oscars in 2012 for Best Foreign Film.

In addition to setting up her own film company, Huat Films, Chong also started her own artiste management agency, Left Profile. She recently spoke to Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore about how she finds strength in herself and others to be funny.
