Michelin Bib Gourmand Chey Sua Carrot Cake finally reopens for business on 5 October 2022

For those living in the Braddell and Toa Payoh vicinity, were you getting jittery when you noticed that the famous Michelin Bib Gourmand Chey Sua Carrot Cake had closed down in the last week of July 2022? Well, I’ve got good news! They’re finally reopening their shutters on 5 October 2022. Let’s rejoice!

Chey Sua Carrot Cake is helmed by a pair of sisters, Shirley and Grace. Shirley, who’s usually the one behind the wok frying plate after plate of carrot cake, had to undergo knee surgery recently, and needed a period of two months to rest and recuperate.

Hawkers and chefs working in the F&B industry (I used to be one of them) are on their feet from the time they step into their stalls, all the way till they’re closed for the day. Although we depend on our dear hawkers to get tasty food, let’s also not forget that they’re also human— I’d petition for hawkers and chefs to get priority seats on the MRT too!

If you’ve not heard or tried their carrot cake before, you’re really missing out! I honestly believe that their white carrot cake is the best in Singapore— do let me know if you have had a better tasting one.

Besides being super delicious, the texture of their carrot cake reminds me of orh luak, with its slightly chewy mouthfeel. This unique version makes it stand out from the others.

The stall usually caters to the breakfast and early lunch crowd, and waiting times range from 20 minutes up to an hour— trust me, it’s worth waiting for.

So head down to Toa Payoh West Market & Food Centre to get your hands on their out-of-this-world carrot cake. I for sure will be heading back for a plate (or two) real soon!
