Leave it to John Galliano and Christian Louboutin to bring the bold shoe fashion to the Met Gala 2024 Red Carpet.
After first unveiling their Tabi shoe collaboration during Maison Margiela’s spring ’24 couture show during Paris Fashion Week in January, the designer duo outfitted two of the Met Gala’s most stylish co-hosts, Zendaya and Bad Bunny, with custom-made Tabi split-toe looks.
Bad Bunny’s Tabi boots, worn with spats, were a standout part of his Margiela haute couture look — composed of a midnight blue wool smoking jacket with black grosgrain lapels and red silk ribbon inseam lampasse. The ensemble was worn over a custom made black satin corset. The musician accessorized with black leather gloves, black silk socks and a midnight blue foam hat.
Co-chair Zendaya turned heads in Margiela from head to toe, in a haute couture sage lamé and organza bias-cut dress worn over a duchess satin corset. Zendaya’s hand-painted plume-like veil and hat wrapped in stockings was created by Stephen Jones for Maison Margiela. And the star — who has been loyal to the red sole king throughout her “Challengers” press tour — wore custom-made Louboutin x Margiela Tabi pumps that peeked out from her dress.
Red carpet co-host Gwendoline Christie stepped out in yet another couture Margiela look, composed of a black silk tulle opera coat with bands of black crinoline — worn over a blood-orange silk velvet cut on the bias dress and a silk satin couture corset. Her accessories flawlessly matched the look — she carried a silk velvet Maison Margiela bag and matching custom-made Tabi pumps by Louboutin and Margiela.
This isn’t the first time the Louboutin x Margiela Tabi collab has made waves on the red carpet this season.
Miley Cyrus wore Tabi pumps at the Grammy Awards 2024 red carpet in Los Angeles in February. Cyrus’ heels featured a yellow-gold suede upper with a metallic back and matching stiletto heels reaching at least 4 inches in height.
Margiela first launched its Tabi shoes, inspired by Japanese tabi socks, in the 1980s. The silhouette has become a staple of the brand and has been embraced by many fashion enthusiasts and celebrity influencers in the past years, including Dua Lipa and Chlöe Sevigny.
