Mel Gibson to be honored as director at Hollywood Film Awards

The Hollywood Film Awards will honor actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson with their Hollywood Director Award next month.

The award coincides with the release of his latest directorial effort "Hacksaw Ridge" which opens on November 4.

The film stars Andrew Garfield in the true story of Desmond T. Doss, an Army medic who refused to bear arms during the Second World War on religious grounds. Despite being ridiculed by fellow soldiers, he would go on to risk his life and save 75 men in the Battle of Okinawa without firing a shot. Doss won the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The film also stars Vince Vaughn and Teresa Palmer.

Gibson made his directorial debut with "The Man Without a Face" in 1993, and would go on to win an Oscar for Best Director for "Braveheart" two years later. He also directed "The Passion of the Christ" in 2004.

Gibson will receive his director's award on November 6 at the gala event hosted by James Corden.
