Tanglin Halt Market houses many culinary gems known for affordable fare, including iconic names like Wei Yi Laksa and Tanglin Halt Original Peanut Pancake. Here’s another name to add to, or keep on the list of must-visit spots while you’re there: Mei Wei Xiao Chi.
Mei Wei Xiao Chi is among several economic bee hoon stalls within the Commonwealth vicinity. Still, it stands differentiated in more ways than one. Aside from being the supposed ‘pioneer’ stall, this family-run business sells old-school desserts on top of its main offering. Not to mention, nothing on the menu costs above S$2.20!
Yes, you read that right. What gets you a takeaway cup of kopi peng elsewhere can afford you a full meal here. These prices are essentially unheard of in the present day. As expected, they attract queues for as long as the stall is open.
Oh, you don’t need to be an early bird to catch the worm. Mei Wei Xiao Chi opens from the evening into the night (or rather, early morning) from 6pm to 12.30am — perfect timing for night owls and supper-enjoyers.
Nothing hits harder than a good old greasy plate of fried bee hoon while you’re burning that midnight oil. The Fried Bee Hoon at Mei Wei Xiao Chi costs just S$1.40 for a Small plate and S$2 for a Large serving. If you’re looking for something heartier, throw some yellow noodles into the mix and get a plate of Mee + Bee Hoon (S$1.60/S$2.20).
Of course, don’t forget to top your plate off with a couple of the enticing fried goodies displayed at the stall front. These include Otah, Spring Rolls, Ngoh Hiang and not forgetting some glorious freshly-fried Chicken Wings. For S$1.50 a pop, these are not to be missed.
Want something soothing after a hard day’s work? Mei Wei Xiao Chi also serves bowls of Peanut Porridge (S$1.50) and traditional desserts like Bubur Hitam (S$1.50), Green Bean Soup (S$1.50) and Red Bean Soup (S$1.50).
