We all know that a timeless trench coat is full of history and heritage — it's the foundation piece of any stylish wardrobe.

But, this spring, it’s the cropped half trench that reigns supreme. Dubbed the “Roy Cropper” jacket (yes, Coronation Street’s finest is the unexpected sartorial style icon behind this season’s coolest cover-up), the functional-but-fashionable beige jacket was also seen at Prada and Bottega Veneta S/S 24 runway shows.

I have to be honest, I absolute adore this new “Honey, I shrunk my trench” because at 5ft 7', the full length trench coat can be a whole lot of beige for me to pull off! I think it can be tricky finding the right shade that looks chic and doesn’t make you feel drab and washed out, but the cute half-trench has just the right amount of classic neutral tone to still feel elegant — just with a sportier twist.

When it comes to choosing your cropped trench, may I suggest you head straight to the high street. Yes, Burberry may arguably be the most iconic, but if you don’t have a spare £1,450 (for half a coat that doesn’t cover your bum), Arket, H&M, COS and Boden have a fantastic selection whatever your shape, size or style.

If you have a larger bust (yes, that’s me) choose either a single-breasted style and keep a few buttons undone to create that all-important flattering V-neck or opt for a double-breasted design but with a waist-cinching belt, to create instant definition. If you're petite, then spring’s half trench may be just the jacket as you probably find most full-length versions usually swamp and overpower your frame. And, if you’re loving the more modern, boxier silhouettes, wearing a contrasting softer shape on your bottom-half such as drapey wide-leg trousers or tailored joggers will perfectly balance proportions.

Is it worth investing in yet another trench? Absolutely! The epitome of versatile chic, the trench coat’s shorter little sister is equally good slung over a cashmere knit or draped over sleek suiting, making it the perfect top note as we transition into spring.

Here are my top picks of cropped trench coats from the high street, as there’s always room in our wardrobes for just one more trench…
