A Color of the Year—or COTY as its known in the biz—can be interpreted as a rallying cry to follow a trend instead of tapping into your personal aesthetic. But this year, Benjamin Moore is welcoming you to do both. Today, the company named October Mist 1495 as its 2022 Color of the Year, a shade that’s versatile enough to allow you to stay in style while staying true to yourself, thanks to the release of a corresponding paint palette.

A gently shaded sage, October Mist feels like a natural extension of Aegan Teal, Benjamin Moore’s 2021 Color of the Year. Equal parts organic and dreamy, October Mist can ground any room and empower you to make this It shade your own. It also proves that sage is a color to watch in the months ahead—just see Sherwin-Williams’ 2022 COTY, Evergreen Fog, or the cool greens we spotted at Salone del Mobile this year.

“We homed in on October Mist because it felt so fresh in the moment, but it also has a timeless quality,” explains Nivara Xaykao, associate manager of color marketing and development. “It’s distinct enough to make an impression of its own, but then it’s subtle enough to pair with so many other colors.”

When developing a complementary 2022 color palette, the Benjamin Moore team drew inspiration from botany’s breadth of shades. And while October Mist is the metaphorical stem, the rest of the 2022 palette boasts a range of subtle neutrals and vibrant pigments, empowering you to mix and match as you see fit.

“As the spaces in our homes continue to evolve, we uncover more opportunities to express our individuality and leverage the power of color to design environments that serve different functions and styles,” Andrea Magno, the brand’s director of color marketing and development, shares. “October Mist 1495 and the corresponding Color Trends 2022 palette reflect an effortless harmony of colors while inspiring unique combinations for any paint project.”

Whether you pair October Mist with the warm tones of Wild Flower 2090-40 or a neutral like Morning Dew OC-140, it’s safe to say this color of the year has the power to tap into everyone’s personal aesthetic. (Yes, even yours.)

“Individuality is what makes us unique,” Arianna Cesa, the brand’s color marketing and development specialist. “Our homes can be the ultimate source of self-expression—and we curated our palette with that in mind.”
