The New Maserati GranCabrio Might Be the Last of Its Kind

Maserati knows there really is such a thing as addition by subtraction.

The Italian sports car maker has just unveiled the 2024 GranCabrio, the convertible version of the new GranTurismo. The model may lack a hard-top, but it delivers the same kind of performance that enthusiasts have come to expect from the nameplate.

The GranCabrio looks exactly like the GranTurismo except for one major difference: it doesn’t have a roof. There is, of course, a fabric soft-top for when the weather takes a turn for the worse. It’s available in black, Blue Marine, Titan Gray, Granata (red), and a new color called Greige which appears to be a grayish beige. The covering stows away in the truck and can be raised in 16 seconds and lowered in 14 seconds at speeds of up to 31 mph if you want to deploy it on the go. While some tweaks were necessary to the exterior, the interior looks identical to that found in the coupé with the exception of a neck warmer and an optional wind blocker.

The range-topping Trofeo variant of the GranCabrio will be the first to hit the market. This version of the car comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6. That’s the same Nettuno mill found in the MC20, Maserati’s most powerful model. It’s been detuned slightly here—as it is in the GranTurismo Trofeo—but still pumps out a more than respectable 542 hp and 480 ft lbs of torque, which is routed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The GranCabrio is more than 300 pounds heavier than the GranTurismo, so performance does take a slight dip. It’s hard to imagine anyone complaining about being able to hit 62 mph in 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 196 mph (which is 3 mph slower than the coupé) with the top down.

Although no timetable was provided, other versions of the GranCabrio are expected to follow. This includes the all-electric Folgore model that was announced when Maserati first teased the convertible in 2022. The GranTurismo Folgore has already been formally announced but has yet to go on sale.

The GranCabrio is expected to launch later this summer. Maserati has yet to announce a price for the convertible, but the GranTurismo Trofeo starts at $190,000. Although nothing has been confirmed yet, we’d wager the droptop’s price will come in north of that figure.
