Mary Tyler Moore has died at 80, and her family and friends are in our thoughts
UPDATE: Seconds after HelloGiggles published the below story on Mary Tyler Moore’s deteriorating condition, news broke that Moore passed away at the age of 80. The statement from her spokesperson, Mara Buxbaum, reads,
Today, beloved icon, Mary Tyler Moore, passed away at the age of 80 in the company of friends and her loving husband of over 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine. A groundbreaking actress, producer, and passionate advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Mary will be remembered as a fearless visionary who turned the world on with her smile.”

Amidst a week — month? year? — of seemingly never-ending bad news, we are so sorry to report that Mary Tyler Moore is reportedly in the hospital, in grave condition.
TMZ reports that Moore, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was in her 30s, is in a condition “so grim family members are coming to the hospital to say goodbye.”
Her health, sadly, has been deteriorating for years. In 2004, Moore told the Chicago Tribune that she’d undergone several laser surgeries to treat deteriorating vision. Then, in 2011, Moore had brain surgery to remove a brain tumor, with her former costar Dick Van Dyke telling Larry King in 2015 that “she is not [doing well]. She has diabetes, which she’s had for years, and it’s taken a toll on her.”
“She’s not even communicating, now,” Van Dyke added, noting that he speaks to Moore’s husband from time to time. “I don’t know how bad that is, but it makes me sad.”
Apparently things have taken a turn for the much worse, with one of TMZ’s sources saying that Mary has been on a respirator for more than a week.
It’s undoubtedly a heartbreaking time for the 80-year-old icon and her family, though we are glad to hear that they’ve rushed to her side. Moore made an impression on the entire world with the pioneering Mary Tyler Moore Show — hey, did you know women can be funny? — as well as on The Dick Van Dyke Show and in films like Ordinary People, for which she was nominated for an Oscar. Still, it’s undeniable that her husband and the rest of her family (as well as Moore herself) are the ones feeling this the most.
