Marvel is *so close* to hiring a female director for “Captain Marvel” and we’re stoked about it

It’s no secret that it’s mostly men behind the camera in Hollywood, whether it be writing, directing, art direction, lighting, producing, or whatever. The list goes on. Over the last few years, the number of women doing those jobs has certainly increased, but not a lot that we can high five one another and be like “YES, IT IS HAPPENING!” And by it, we mean women running the Hollywood show.

So while we’re not nearly to the point where a surplus of ladies are yelling ACTION, we’re still thrilled to see that it’s happening in small batches — especially when it happens on a huge, big budget Marvel movie.

Captain Marvel will be Marvel’s first female-led movie, starring the absolutely delightful Brie Larson as the title hero. She’s going to save the world, you guys! And behind the camera, Marvel is intent on finding the *perfect* female director for the job.

Though the movie is still three years away (I KNOW) and won’t begin filming until next year (UGH), The Hollywood Reporter got its hands on a short-list of directors in consideration for the big job.

There’s Niki Caro, who directed Whale Rider, North Country, and the upcoming The Zookeeper’s Wife; Lesli Linka Glatter is one of the main directors on Showtime’s Homeland, and has also directed episodes of Mad Men, True Blood, The West Wing, and Gilmore Girls (omg) along with the ’90s Now and Then; and Lorene Scafaria wrote Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, and directed Seeking A Friend for the End of the World along with a few episodes of New Girl.

THR goes on to explain that these three (along with possibly a few others, but their names haven’t been made public yet) will have to present a Captain Marvel ~vision~ to Marvel, and a decision will be made ~sometime~ in the future.

Even though we’re still a long ways away from this movie being made, let alone actually watching this movie, we absolutely love that Marvel is handing it over to the ladies. We know they can get the job done.
