Margot Robbie on Dressing the Part for Her 'Wolf of Wall Street' Audition

Margot Robbie in TheWolf of Wall Street

Margot Robbie may owe her role in The Wolf of Wall Street to a very uncomfortable pair of high heels. The Australian actress was one of many who competed for the role of Naomi Belfort, Leonardo DiCaprio’s manipulative second wife in Martin Scorsese’s Wall Street drama. She impressed the director with her audition tape, but when it came time to read for Scorsese and DiCaprio in person, she made the mistake of arriving in jeans and boots. ”The casting director took one look at me and said, ‘Go down the street and buy the tightest dress and highest heels you can find. That is Naomi,’” Robbie told W Magazine in a new profile. “I came back dressed like that and read for Marty and Leo. Those heels were killing me, which is what I remembered most.”

Robbie won the scene-stealing part, and the subsequent buzz helped her land a role in the upcoming movie Focus, in which she plays a rookie con artist mentored by Will Smith. The movie opens in February, and left Robbie with an unusual skill. “I now know how to steal a watch when someone’s wearing it,” Robbie told W. “It’s an excellent talent to have.”
