Manny Pacquiao reveals reason for accepting General Malvar's biopic

21 Oct – Professional Boxer Manny Pacquiao admitted that the inspirational story of General Miguel Malvar was the reason why he decided to accept the role to play the titular character of the upcoming biopic, to be produced by JMV Films Production.

As reported on Push, Pacquiao, who spoke to the media about the project at the Anta Philippines media launch earlier this week, stated that he has received a lot of movie offers but decided to accept this particular project since he liked the fact that Malvar was a hero - the last general of the First Philippine Republic to have surrendered to the American forces during the Philippine-American War.

"It is wonderful to be able to inspire our people. I don't know who else are in this movie for now, but hopefully we can realise this true-to-life story that will inspire our fellow countrymen," he said.

Aside from the said project, Pacquiao said that he is also currently in talks to work in his first international movie.

"I received an offer, an American Hollywood movie. They hand-picked me. But we haven't started yet. We will announce everything once we start shooting," he added.

On the other hand, Inquirer reported that the family of General Malvar has recently expressed opposition over the casting of Pacquiao to play the historical figure.

Said Gabriel Malvar, great-grandson of the said general, his great-grandfather had refused to have anything to do with politics and declined the position of Governor of Batangas after surrendering in 1902, and thus the family would prefer someone "not involved in politics or in public service" to portray him.
