Malaysian-born chef Diana Chan wins MasterChef Australia

Malaysian-born Australian Diana Chan was named the winner of MasterChef Australia 2017.

The 29-year-old accountant took home the trophy in a nail-biting finale, where she defeated fellow finalist Ben Ungermann by just one point.

The Melbourne-based chef also walks away with AUD250,000 and a monthly column in the food magazine, Delicious.

During the three-cook showdown, Chan was leading the first two challenges with three points ahead, but in the final round, Ungermann managed to catch up, only to be ultimately let down by his injured finger which he accidentally cut during the first round.

In the end, Chan was ruled the winner after finishing with a score of 90 points, while Ungermann got 89 points.

Chan, who grew up in Johor Bahru plans to use her prize money to open a restaurant in Melbourne, serving wholesome meals with fusion flavours and Malaysian influences.

She is the second Malaysian to win MasterChef Australia title. The first to win was Penang-born Adam Liaw Chan during MasterChef Australia Season 2 back in 2010.
