Luke Bryan Says Katy Perry's Being "Picked On" Amid 'American Idol' Backlash

Katy Perry has been dealing with a lot of criticism this season on American Idol ( she was accused on mom shaming by a contestant who quit the show), and fellow judge Luke Bryan is coming to her defense.

"Katy Perry's been dealing with stuff like that her whole career," he said at CMA Fest. "We all get it.… I mean we're judging kids that people at home fall in love with.… We're not gonna bat 1,000 as judges."

Luke added "I think we get set up. As judges, you know, we kinda fall on the sword a lot of times. And get set up to where people can get very vocal on socials and stuff. My thing is, I think when me and Lionel and Katy sit down at the desk, in our hearts, we're doing the best we can."

Speaking of Katy specifically, Luke said "Katy gets picked on for going out and trying to have fun making a TV show. You can't be so safe in the moment that you're so homogenized, you can't ever go for a joke. Or go for a fun moment. Sometimes, you just gotta say stuff [...] It makes me appreciate her even more, just how big of a scale she's had to deal with that her whole career."

The Daily Mail recently reported that Katy feels like she's being edited to seem like the "nasty" judge on American Idol, and is considering leaving the show. "Katy feels like [the producers] threw her under the bus," a source explained. "She feels like her comments could have been removed. Katy became aware of the harsh criticism. Getting booed really upset her. She was trying to stay in her lane, do her job and go home."

Katy allegedly makes about $25 million per season, but the money doesn't matter as much as her legacy: "For her, it is starting to be more of a legacy issue," the source said. "She does not want her career defined by a talent competition show where she isn’t even performing."
