Three-door buses will be travelling the roads here in two years’ time, following the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) call on Tuesday (15 May) for a tender to purchase 100 such vehicles.

This will allow the LTA to better assess the suitability of implementing three-door buses in its fleet and also replace ageing buses, said the authority in a news release.

The move comes following positive feedback from commuters, as well as the encouraging results of recent three-door bus trials, said the LTA.

As part of the earlier trials, Tower Transit Singapore operated a three-door double-deck bus on Service 143 from March to September in 2017. A three-door single-deck bus was also operated by SMRT on Services 190 and 901 from June 2017 to January this year.

“Commuters welcomed the additional door on the buses as it made boarding and alighting from buses smoother and quicker,” said the LTA.

The authority added that it will look to improve the current bus designs with bus suppliers so as to further improve commuter flows and shorten journey times.
