So that’s it. With his seventh outing as Charles Xavier, the world’s most powerful mutant mind, in Logan, Patrick Stewart is officially retiring from the X-Men franchise.

Speaking at a SiriusXM Town Hall alongside Logan director and co-writer James Mangold and co-star Hugh Jackman – who’s also retiring as Wolverine and reconfirmed the decision at the same venue – Stewart gave a moving speech about his time in the franchise:

“A week ago, Friday night in Berlin, the three of us sat, watching the movie. And I was so moved by it, much more moved than I had been the first time of seeing it. Maybe it was the company of these two guys, but the movie ended and — this is an admission — but at one point [Hugh] reached out, and he took my hand in those last few minutes, and I saw him go [mimes wiping a tear from his eye] like this, and then I realized I had just done the same thing.

Then, the movie ended… and we were going to be taken up on stage, but not until the credits were over. So, we had some time to sit there and, as I sat there I realised there will never be a better, a more perfect, a more sensitive, emotional, and beautiful way of saying au revoir to Charles Xavier than this movie. So, I told [Hugh] that same evening, ‘I’m done too. It’s all over.’”

For his final outing as Professor X, Stewart will play an older version of the X-Men leader who is much the worse for wear. Early reviews already suggest that Logan is THE Wolverine movie we’ve all been waiting for. But remember that moment in X-Men when Professor X and Wolverine met for the first time?

As if anyone needed reminding, this is the second iconic role Stewart has played after Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The 76-year-old will be dearly missed.

The Logan Singapore release date has been set for March 2.
