Lin-Manuel Miranda Cuts Off His Hair After Last ‘Hamilton’ Performance

Well, that was fast!

Minutes after taking his final Hamilton curtain call, creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda chopped off his now-signature long hair.

“Teach ‘em how to say goodbye…” the 36-year-old wrote on Twitter, adding a black and white picture of a single cut lock of hair lying against a white table.

The actor and songwriter then debuted the cut at his goodbye party, posing for photographers on the red carpet while wearing a jacket in tribute to the late Muhammad Ali.

It didn’t take long for his 659,000 Twitter followers to quickly dub his ‘do the “Hamilcut.”

Miranda had famously grown his hair out for the role. His hair was still buzzed short when he first premiered material from his hip-hop musical – back then thought to just be a concept album he was calling The Hamilton Mixtape – for President Barack Obama and family at the White House Evening of Poetry, Music, and the Spoken Word in May 2009.

His replacement in the role, Javier Muñoz, will wear a wig for the role, a representative from the show confirmed to PEOPLE.

That’s good news for Miranda, who told PEOPLE in the press room of the 2016 Tony Awards that he plans to return to Hamilton occasionally.

“I have written a role I can’t age out of,” he joked in the Tonys press room, after winning two awards for best original score and best book of a musical. “I intend to drop-in on this, over and over again. Cut to 20 years from now and you’ll be like ‘Lin, when will you stop playing Hamilton?’ ”

Before then, the Pulitzer Prize-winner will be plenty busy. He composed the score to the new Disney animated musical Moana, out in November, and will soon begin filming the live-action Mary Poppins sequel alongside Emily Blunt. (Miranda is only one Oscar away from an EGOT, so expect some more film work until he gets one).

Of course, you won’t have to wait that long to see him. Miranda will appear on Today on Monday, to perform his new charity single benefitting Orlando victims with Jennifer Lopez.
