i Light Singapore 2024 returns for 10th run on 31 May
If you head down to Marina Bay in June, you’ll see light installations everywhere. These are not early Christmas light decorations, but those of i Light Singapore (iLSG) 2024.
i Light Singapore is Asia’s leading sustainable light festival, showcasing light art installations made by Singaporean and overseas artists. The pieces are created using energy-saving lighting and/or eco-friendly items. The aim is to encourage festival goers and members of the public to integrate eco-friendly habits into their day-to-day lives.
Returning for its 10th edition this year, i Light Singapore 2024, organised by the Urban Redevelopment Authority, will run from 31 May to 23 Jun. Beyond Marina Bay, South Beach and Millenia Walk, i Light Singapore will be held at Tanjong Pagar for the first time.
The theme of i Light Singapore 2024 is Cyclical Nature (derived from the colour green from i Light Singapore’s Visible Light narrative). With green often linked to nature, this year’s festival navigates and redefines the limitless potential of common objects thrown away and their impact on the environment through redesign, restoration and repurposing.
General admission is free, but fees apply for certain activities. Here are some sneak peeks.
Main Festival Grounds at Marina Bay
At the Mist Walk, Spin Me a Yarn by United Kingdom-based Studio Vertigo will showcase bigger-than-life yarn balls that are interlinked with their environment. This symbolises how yarn production by the textile industry generates a staggering amount of pollution globally.
Another innovative approach to the theme is Kinetic Perspective by Spain-based Juan Fuentes Studio, found at the Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza. Made from upcycled iron remnants from industrial factories and designed as optical illusions, the circles in the exhibition move constantly to create limitless combinations, redefining what is familiar.
Not far away from the Red Dot Design Museum, view Liminal;Minimal by Singapore University of Technology and Design students Benjamin Lim and Yeo Soon Yii. It is built using recycled materials from construction sites, spotlighting the problem of construction waste.
Contrasted against the cityscape along the Marina Bay promenade waterfront, it serves as a stark reminder for greener construction practices in the face of rapid urban development.
New Tanjong Pagar Precinct
Around Guoco Tower and Orchid Hotel, you can admire BottleBlooms by local artist Yun.
The artwork features solar-powered plastic blossoms upcycled from roughly 1000 polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. These are taken from a public collection drive.
At the Discover Tanjong Pagar Community Green, visitors can partake in Kickit Team Tennis. It is an interactive light exhibition by Hungary-based artist collective Limelight.
Two teams of up to five-a-side put their teamwork to a test in a game resembling tennis. Players on opposite ends kick glowing balls and send light paths whizzing across the field.
At Tras Link Park, Hidden Garden by Koros Design showcases trees adorned with light art inflatables. These remind one of various flowers, as a homage to the city’s flora and fauna.
Satellite Sites Make a Comeback
Returning as a satellite site this year, South Beach will play host to Lumi. Lumi is a multi-faceted artwork in the form of a meandering river by art collective 65 SQM @ SUSA SPACE.
Perceptible and immersive, it encourages visitors to interact with one another. By doing so, they will be able to shape and reshape the artwork in a gesture of co-creation. Alternatively, visitors can sit and rest on the yoga balls wrapped in upcycled net fabric.
At Millenia Walk – another returning satellite site – is the celebrated Modern Guru and the Path to Artificial Happiness by Australia-based art and technology studio ENESS.
The media art installation contrasts the classic example of a sage, a mentor who helps one to achieve spiritual epiphany and blissfulness, with the modern-day pursuit of satisfaction.
Fringe Programmes
For the first time, i Light Singapore 2024 has teamed up with sustainable lifestyle event The Conscious Festival. The two have put together wellness workshops, transformative talks, a bootcamp for servant leadership, music performances and an outdoor marketplace.
At The Conscious Festival x iLSG, visitors will ponder the theme of mindfulness. They will rediscover associations with one another as well as the Earth that sustains them.
Crowd favourite GastroBeats will return with a wide offering of culinary delights at the Bayfront Event Space. This year, more eco-friendly food products will be on sale. These include The Curry Club’s Mumbai Pav Bun containing assorted plants from organic farms.
In line with the Festival’s commitment to sustainability, plastic straws will not be provided. If you’re heading down, bring your own reusable cups, flasks and food storage containers.
