"A Light Never Goes Out" disqualified for Oscars' Best International Pic

13 Dec - The Federation of Motion Film Producers of Hong Kong recently revealed that Hong Kong's official entry to the Academy Awards' Best International Picture has been disqualified.

In a statement released on 11 December, the association stated that they have been told by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) that the selected movie, "A Light Never Goes Out" will not be able to represent Hong Kong in the competition despite it receiving a majority of votes by the selection committee.

Following the news, Crucindo Hung, chairman of the Federation of Motion Film Producers of Hong Kong, revealed that the movie was disqualified due to a conflict of interest.

According to the Chairman, he had changed the 13 members of the selection committee earlier this year after AMPAS sent a notice saying that members couldn't vote if they have been on the selection board for more than six years.

However, one of the new committee members who had been appointed was also an actor in the said movie that was eventually selected.

Directed by Anastasia Tsang, the film, which stars Sylvia Chang, Simon Yam and Henick Chou among others, revolves around a woman's effort to save her husband's legacy in making neon signs.
