LEGO Batmobile Is 18 Feet Long, Made Of 500,000 Pieces, And It’s Amazing

Nathan Sawaya is about to become your new hero. That’s because the artist has created the LEGO equivalent of the Mona Lisa, Brooklyn Bridge, and Pyramids all rolled into one, as he has made a full-sized Batmobile using just the miniature blocks.

Sawaya made this sublime 3D model to celebrate the 80th birthday of DC comics, and in order to do so he had to use over 500,000 pieces of LEGO, while it took him two months to complete.

Sawaya has been talking to Entertainment Weekly about re-creating the iconic vehicle in LEGO form, revealing that the eighteen-feet long piece will make its official debut in Sydney at Australia’s Powerhouse Museum in November.

But why did Sawaya pick the Batmobile? Well, it was quite simple actually. “This is a dream project,” Sawaya enthused. “This is the Batmobile! What other vehicle is so iconic?” The answer is, obviously, none.

Sawaya actually got a helping hand on this project from Jim Lee, a DC co-publisher, who drew the design of a new Batmobile live at a Comic-Con panel, which he then used as a blueprint as he came up with the Lego structure.

Sawaya believes that his passion for LEGO and Jim’s for cars mixed perfectly for the project, before explaining that he was attracted to it “because it was taking this iconic vehicle and getting to interpret it myself.”

And while Sawaya insisted that Batman was one of his favorite DC superheroes, he admitted that he had a rather cult choice for his number one choice.

“Batman is one of the iconic characters, of course, he’s one of my favorites,” Sawaya insisted. “If I had to pick someone else, it’s probably someone like Bunker – which is not a well known character, but someone who can use his mind to manipulate little plastic bricks. And I think that kind of in a way is similar to what I do.”
