Ahead of The Last Jedi, when fans thought they might actually learn who Rey's parents were, one popular theory was that she was actually the grand or great granddaughter of Palpatine. It's a stretch, but an interesting one nonetheless. Fans pointed out that her naming mechanics hinted at some royal ancestry, with "Rey" being Spanish for "king." Other, nerdier evidence showed that her fighting style was similar to the Emperor's. Sure! Why not!?

With Star Wars IX on the horizon, fans are convinced that they will learn the true identity of Rey's parents in the next movie. And a new leak fuels rumors of Palpatine making an appearance as well.

This scene, however, is between Kylo Ren and Palpatine, sources tell Express:

Emperor Palpatine will play a role in Episode 9. Specifically, Kylo Ren with an ignited lightsaber, presumably his cross-guard lightsaber, cutting through a blast door on some jungle planet and entering what appears to be a vault. Eventually Kylo Ren is holding a square object that projects a lifelike projection of Emperor Palpatine. Palpatine’s hand is raised in front of Kylo Ren showing blueprints or plans that could be a new weapon.

While this doesn't connect Palpatine to Rey, it does, however smooth over this franchise's villain situation. Like it or not, we didn't learn the full backstory of Snoke before his death. It's possible that Palpatine made plans in case of his death, and left behind instructions for anyone that would follow him. Was Snoke working to carry out Palpatine's wishes? Is Kylo Ren picking up where Snoke left off in carrying out Palpatine's final plan?

That scenario seems unlikely, considering what the Star Wars wiki says of Palpatine's death:

Prior to the his demise, he created the Contingency to destroy the Empire in the event of his death, believing that the Empire did not deserve to survive without its Emperor. As a consequence, the Imperial remnants were further weakened and less able to resist the New Republic during the waning days of the Galactic Civil War. Ultimately, the Empire capitulated the war after the Battle of Jakku in 5 ABY, ending the era founded by Darth Sidious. Following his death, Sidious' legacy became the base of what became the First Order, an hermit state led by Supreme Leader Snoke, who was also a practitioner of the dark side of the Force. The reign of Snoke would untimely end with his death at the hands of his own apprentice and Skywalker's grandson Kylo Ren, who succeeded his master as the new Supreme Leader, desiring to let the past die along the Jedi and the Sith.

Is it possible that this was all part of his plan? To start over and let Snoke and the First Order take over where the Empire left off?

It's unclear how this would work, but we do know that Palpatine actor Ian McDiarmid is eager to return to the role. And, hell, if they're bringing everyone else back, why not him, too?
