Le Taste: Fusion Asian-Western stall with large portions of salted egg fish, cereal mayo chicken & curry cheese pork don

Can’t decide between Asian or Western food? The menu at Le Taste may pique your interest. This stall is tucked away in a coffeeshop in Jalan Besar and has received recognition for its large portions.

I made a trip down to Le Taste after receiving a recommendation from a reader. The dishes on the menu had been categorised into 5 sections— Let It Burn featured grilled meats while Play Cheat Day consisted of deep fried chicken and fish. On top of that, they also had Noodles Party, with 4 types of pasta, and Rice Bowl Lovers, containing 5 types of Japanese-inspired don.

Some of the fusion flavours offered intrigued me— the stall had salted egg and cereal mayo chicken and fish, plus curry cheese and sriracha as rice bowl options.

Each dish was served on a gorgeous stone-coloured plate, making them appear more atas than your usual coffeeshop Western stall.

What I tried at Le Taste

As a huge salted egg lover, I was instantly drawn to the Goldie Salted Egg Chicken Cutlet (S$9.50). The dish came with a large piece of fried chicken cutlet topped with salted egg sauce, served with a side of fries, ketchup and lettuce.

The chicken cutlet was perfectly cooked with a crispy exterior and juicy flesh. The salted egg sauce was surprisingly sweet— it was not very savoury and the salted egg flavour was a bit on the milder side. I personally prefer for my salted egg to be more savoury, but I still found the Goldie Salted Egg Chicken Cutlet to be very satisfying.

The fries on the side were nice and crispy while the crisp lettuce balanced out the indulgence of the deep fried dishes. However, I thought that S$9.50 was a little steep, and would have liked for there to perhaps be another side dish to further enhance the entire experience.

The Grilled Chicken Chop (S$8) came with the same sides as the Goldie Salted Egg Chicken Cutlet. I opted to have mine served with black pepper sauce, and was delighted at how generous Le Taste was with the portion of sauce.

The chicken chop was tender and the black pepper sauce coated every exposed surface of the chicken nicely. The sauce had a slight peppery kick to it, effectively giving the chicken lots of flavour.

The Grilled Chicken Chop wasn’t all that mind-blowing, but did offer a comforting and nostalgic taste.

I decided to try one of the pastas on the menu, and settled for the Smokey Ducky Olio (S$8)— this aglio olio dish came topped with slices of smoked duck and mushrooms.

Each spaghetti strand was nicely coated in oil and minced garlic. The aglio olio was mildly savoury with the minced garlic providing a bit of extra flavour. The smoked duck slices were a little on the drier side, but were salty and paired well with the noodles. Like the Grilled Chicken Chop, the Smokey Ducky Olio tasted pretty average and comparable to most other stalls, but was a simple yet tasty dish to have for a meal.

Finally, I ordered the Curry Cheesy Grilled Pork Don (S$8). Despite having don in the name, this dish was served on a plate instead of a bowl— interesting. The dish consisted of white rice topped with chopped pork slices and curry cheese sauce, served with a side of lettuce and ketchup.

The pork slices were a bit of a let down as they were quite tough. Some slices also contained sharp bones— I would have much preferred if the bone had been cut off before being chopped and served, especially since the curry sauce coating the meat made it a bit harder to distinguish between the meat and bone portions of each pork slice.

The curry cheese sauce itself was pretty unique— the spice level was very mild, and the cheese aspect reminded me of cheese powder, but altogether, it was pretty tasty and addictive. I enjoyed how the sauce tasted when paired with the pork, though I felt that there could have been a little more to coat the rice more evenly.

Final thoughts

Honestly, the food at Le Taste reminded me of dishes from most other Western food stalls in Singapore. The portions were big, but not all that generous in relation to the steep prices. The Goldie Salted Egg Chicken Cutlet was the most interesting dish I tried, and if you’re a fan of sweet salted egg, perhaps you should give it a go.

I’d certainly revisit if I was in the area and in search of some comforting Western food, but I wouldn’t travel down just for it again.

Expected damage: S$8 – S$10.80 per pax
