Lauryn Hill Wore Plaid on Plaid on Plaid to Sit Front Row at Burberry
Burberry officially closed out London Fashion Week tonight with a collection from Creative Director Daniel Lee that celebrated the eccentricities and travel habits of Londoners. The clothes called to mind the coolest cliques in the city—skinny riding pants worn with boots and cropped jackets, classic pleated kilts layered over cropped trousers, nubby knits and fringy outerwear. It was a little bohemian and a little kooky-cool, just the kind of style vernacular beloved by one of the show’s most epic front-row guests: Lauryn Hill.
Hill arrived covered in Burberry tartan, wearing the label’s iconic checked trench coat with a shirt and tie and a red checked shawl over her shoulder. The musician wore sunglasses and a lime green Burberry check scarf tied around her head, while also wielding a personal fan in her red leather glove-bedecked hand. She carried two Burberry bags, one in the same red check as the scarf and the other a brown satchel matching her trench coat. And, of course, she tied a bright yellow Burberry check scarf around the accessories. Her look was a reminder that sometimes, more really is more.
Hill was accompanied by her daughter Selah, who was dressed in a giant fur trapper hat and wool poncho. Their mother-daughter moment nearly stole the show, even if several famous faces walked the runway tonight: actors Lesley Manville from The Crown; Richard E. Grant, who most recently starred in Saltburn; and Jason Isaacs, currently starring in The White Lotus.

Not even the person dressed up as a literal knight could take the attention away from Hill. Maurice Kamara, creator of the Instagram account @thepeoplegallery, stopped to ask her a few questions, one of which was, “If you could give anybody your styling tips, what would they be?” Hill replied: “Be free, and think style, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, as well as physically.”
He also asked, “What's your favorite song right now?” And, of course, like the queen she is, she had the perfect, heartfelt response, “That’s too tough. But in honor of Roberta Flack, who we just lost, ‘Killing Me Softly.’”
