If there's one hairstyle that proves the power of a fresh make0ver, some celebrity endorsement and impressive PR, it's the bob. What was once a daring and universally feared hairstyle has become the most-requested cut of the year, with everyone from Hailey Bieber to Zendaya experimenting, and a never-ending list of bob trends taking over (see: the hydro bob, the myriad baroque iterations, and the blunt bob 2.0 for proof).

The next instalment is, according to hair trend forecaster Tom Smith, the 'bell-bottom' bob. 'This new cut has minimal layers; it's flipped out at the ends and can be styled with or without a fringe and bangs,' he shares. 'It's cut either with perfect precision or a more undone texture, and is slim to the head nearer the parting before flaring out with volume at the ends,' he adds.

Aside from the aesthetic itself, the real point of difference from the sea of bob trends infiltrating your Instagram feed right now boils down to the inspiration. The silhouette, says Smith, is inspired by the flared cut of bell-bottom jeans; the equally nostalgic seventies favourite which has been enjoying somewhat of a resurgence lately too.

Offering a more dramatic look to your standard blunt or classic bob, Hailey Bieber, Daisy Ridley, and Anok Yai are among the famous faces who've been spotted sporting the latest flicked-out bell-bottom bob.

And, in even better news, it's pretty versatile when it comes to styling, too. Case in point: if you've taken the plunge and opted for a micro-bob, you can simply flick out the ends to create the 'bell-bottom' finish using your tongs or a wide-brushed tool (the new Babyliss Air Wand has the perfect attachment for this).

Likewise, you can style it with both a side or middle parting. 'If you want to showcase a more symmetrical face, opt for a middle parting and a perfect sharp flip at the ends. Meanwhile, if you prefer a softer look, try a side parting with less precise flicks and try tucking one side behind your ear,' says Smith.

There are plenty of heatless styling tips and tricks, too. 'Gently pre-dry the roots of your hair in a downward motion, then use a small round brush with the help of a styling mousse or heat protector spray to flick out the ends,' shares Smith.

'If your hair drops out easily, try wrapping the ends up in a small Velcro roller while they cool to set the flick in place. Finish with a stronghold hairspray,' he shares. 'And for a softer, more wearable look shake the hair out after styling and add texture spray for a more undone finish.'

Whether you opt for a messier 'bell-bottom' style or perfectly placed flicks, heat styling tools or hardworking sprays, expect to see this trending hairstyle - in all its many guises - cropping up everywhere this summer.
