LaQuan Smith Makes Work Clothes That Double as Going-Out Clothes for Fall 2024

LaQuan Smith said he had "a woman on the go" in mind when designing Fall 2024, and that's why the collection has everything she might need from day to night.

"She's the boss of her own life and very much in charge," he told Fashionista backstage.

In his pursuit of dressing the "24-hour LaQuan-Smith woman," Smith drew inspiration from Wall Street in the '80s and '90s, as well as archival images of Donna Karan. "I was really exploring daywear and a little bit of menswear," he said. "Everything in this collection [is] about things that she can just grab and go and not have to think too much."

The resulting Fall 2024 collection has it all: pinstripe suiting with spicy twists like corsets and high slits for the office (and after); golden dresses fit for a gala and jersey ones for dinner; versatile sheer blouses. Statement outerwear looks fly all on its own. (Watch for the gabardine wool coat and rust-colored leather jackets.) While the color palette is limited primarily to red, gold, black and white, a wide range of textures — latex, fur and flowy chiffon — give the collection a certain boldness.

Held in the gilded halls of Cipriani 25 (fittingly across the street from Wall Street's Charging Bull), the runway show drew one of the coolest crowds at New York Fashion Week including Joey Bada$$, Busta Rhymes, Serayah and Meagan Good, with a surprise serenade from Babyface.
