This week, Buckingham Palace shared the news that King Charles has been diagnosed with cancer. While they chose not to disclose the precise nature of the cancer—it was made clear that he is not suffering from prostate cancer, though the condition was discovered during his treatment for a benign enlarged prostate in January—UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak did reveal that the cancer had been "caught early."

Since the news first broke, there has been an outpouring of well-wishes for the British monarch from the public as well as from those close to the royal family. Among them is Charles's goddaughter, India Hicks. A writer, designer, and former model, Hicks is a descendant of the Mountbatten family and the daughter of Queen Elizabeth's lady-in-waiting Lady Pamela Hicks, whose father was the last viceroy of India. Those close connections led the then-Prince Charles to be named as Hicks's godfather when she was born, and she even served as a bridesmaid in his 1981 wedding to Princess Diana.

The two obviously share a sweet relationship, as Hicks showed in an Instagram post she made following the announcement of Charles's diagnosis, captioned simply "Thoughts and prayers."

The vintage candid photo features Charles in shorts, or possibly swim trunks, with his hands resting on the shoulders of a young Hicks, who smiles at the camera. It's not clear exactly when or where the photo was taken.

Along with Charles's diagnosis, the Palace announced this week that the king had "commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual." He is currently resting at Sandringham House in Norfolk after receiving treatment as an out patient in London.
