Keke Palmer Calls Comparisons To Zendaya 'An Example Of Colourism'

Keke Palmer has hit back at those comparing her to Zendaya on social media and called the comments 'an example of colourism'.

The actor seemingly implied that it's insulting to be compared to another star considering her own career achievements in the world of entertainment.

The Emmy-winning actor addressed the issue while speaking about her role in the upcoming Jordan Peele thriller Nope, which recently opened to $44 million at the Box Office.

Fans have suggested that her role in the film could see her star status rise to that of 25-year-old Zendaya's.

Palmer aired her thoughts on the comments on Twitter, noting her own achievements and highlighting how comparing her to the Euphoria star was a nod to colourism.

She wrote: 'A great example of colourism is to believe I can be compared to anyone.

'I’m the youngest talk show host ever. The first Black woman to star in her own show on Nickelodeon, & the youngest & first Black Cinderella on broadway. I’m an incomparable talent. Baby, THIS, is Keke Palmer [sic].'

Highlighting her two decade-strong career, she added: 'I’ve been a leading lady since I was 11 years old. I have over 100+ credits, and currently starring in an original screenplay that’s the number one film at the box office #NOPE.

'I’ve had a blessed career thus far, I couldn’t ask for more but God continues to surprise me [sic].

The Hustler star's remarks came after numerous Twitter users compared her and Zendaya when discussing their levels of fame.

'Keke Palmer deserves the same hype ya’ll give Zendaya [sic],' one person wrote, before clarifying the actors are equally 'talented' and Palmer 'deserves the same recognition [sic]'.

Another commented: 'One day y’all are going to stop pitting Black women against one another [sic],' while another wrote: 'I hate when y’all do this.

'Like damn enjoy KeKe without bringing up Zendaya & vice versa. They both are shining bright right now. KeKe been that girl & everyone loves her. Now let’s celebrate her without mentioning someone else [sic].'

Another user wrote: 'I'd like someone to do a deep-drive on the similarities and differences between Keke Palmer and Zendaya's careers.

'This may be one of the clearest examples of how colourism plays out in Hollywood. They were both child-stars, but their mainstream popularity is very different [sic].'

When speaking at a Beautycon Festival in 2018, Zendaya said colourism within the entertainment industry needs to end.

Referring to her 'privilege' as a 'light-skinned black woman', she said: 'I am Hollywood’s, I guess you could say, acceptable version of a Black girl and that has to change.

'We’re vastly too beautiful and too interesting for me to just be the only representation of that.'
