Katie Holmes Perfects Her Formula For Summer Dressing
It can be hard to dress well (and especially to layer) during summer, but Katie Holmes just gave us the perfect summer uniform to emulate all season long.
While walking around New York City on Wednesday, Holmes was spotted in two different outfits that had distinct personalities — but each seemed to follow a simple formula: start with a monochromatic set, layer it underneath an oversized outer layer, and wrap it all up with a note-perfect black leather bag. Easy enough, right?

Holmes started out the day in SoHo, where she was spotted in a white scoop neck tank tucked into matching milky linen pants, both from Banana Republic. To contrast these coordinated pieces, the Dawson’s Creek alum added a few pops of black, including a long poplin shirtdress from the same brand, ballet flats, and a T-Lock clutch bag from Totême. (Oh, and she accessorised with her go-to golden necklace.)
Then, later in the day, the actor and director stepped out in a totally different look that had the same bones. She started with a steel-blue cami paired with a matching set of dark wash jeans, both of which were layered under a pinstripe grey painter’s jacket. She then added a pair of black flats and round, tortoiseshell sunglasses, but we couldn’t take our eyes off her bag—which was the same Totême bag that she carried earlier in the day.
Just last month, Holmes seemed to be following a pattern when she layered a slip dress over a tank two different times within the same week. Now, it seems Katie has not only perfected the formula for summer dressing, but she’s found her dependable bag for the season as well.
