JW Anderson's Spring 2024 Clothes Look Like Toys, on Purpose

From a distance, Jonathan Anderson's Spring 2024 collection might simply look like an amalgamation of everyday, casual pieces and tailored clothes. But there's more than meets the eye, with Anderson "putting playfulness in pragmatism," per show notes shared on Instagram.

The latest from JW Anderson debuted at London Fashion Week Saturday as a body of looks that toy with texture and proportion. Cropped hoodies are given unusual structure: shoulders billow up to the ears, dramatically altering the figure. Double-breasted blazers aren't just tailored to be oversized, but they're also made with slightly curved sleeves. Shorts are stiff and stand apart from hips, as if starched to the absolute maximum.

"Clothes meant to be used, misused and toyed with," the show notes continued, which is exactly what he does. The British designer rolls out "proportions that shrink, curve, tilt [and] expand." Cropped T-shirts are made of a shiny, padded material (in very bright colors), which are reminiscent of silicone doll clothes. Crocheted and softly draped dresses offer contrast to leather moto jackets and bomber-inspired trousers that seem to inflate with every step. There are many classic, wearable pieces throughout, but the intention of the designer, who also serves as Loewe's creative director, is clear: play!

China anchors 'monster ship' in South China Sea, Philippine coast guard says
