Just in time for Valentine's Day: The most romantic scenes in ‘Goblin’

It’s been a few weeks since the Korean drama “Goblin” finished airing, and if the special episodes haven’t helped with your withdrawal, don’t worry, Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore has got you covered.

The story in “Goblin” centres around two prominent (and some may say tragic) relationships, that between Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) and Ji Eun-tak (Kim Go-eun), and the Grim Reaper (Lee Dong-wook) and Sunny (Yoo In-na).

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, here’s a list of some of the most romantic scenes from the drama. Warning, if you haven’t completed the series, there are some MAJOR spoilers in this article, so you might want to look away now.

When Eun-tak called the Goblin “hers” (Episode 9)

Kim Shin is all 900-plus-years-old and mighty, but look at his expression when Eun-tak tells the Grim Reaper to stay away from “her” Goblin. Admit it, people, you feel the same when your loved one says similar things.

The Grim Reaper’s date with Sunny (Episode 7)

The Grim Reaper might look all cool with his suit and hat, but put him in a first date with the love of his life and look at the poor fella stumble. Panicking about not having a business card, he even got his star signs mixed up. People born on 5 November (which is incidentally K-pop queen BoA’s birthday) are under Scorpio, not Sagittarius.

Eun-tak and Kim Shin kiss officially for the first time (Episode 10)

Sure, there was that kiss in the middle of the buckwheat field, but that was just Eun-tak trying her luck. This kiss, on the other hand, was intentional. And you can just feel the passion between them when Kim Shin pulls Eun-tak’s face in.

Eun-tak remembers Kim Shin after his return (Episode 15)

Warning, the next few scenes are romantic in a “you will cry your heart out” way. After Kim Shin returns from the void between life and the afterlife, he finds that everyone has forgotten him except his bro the Grim Reaper. Still, he tries to spend time with her, and is finally rewarded when Eun-tak’s memories of him return. Seeing her run through the streets of Quebec looking for a candle to summon the Goblin will surely make the hardest of hearts melt.

Eun-tak rejects the tea that will remove her memories (Episode 16)

Well, it’s a Korean drama, did you really think it would be all smiles and butterflies (no offence, white butterfly being) without some heartbreaks? Yep, Ji Eun-tak’s death comes in the noblest of ways, but it still doesn’t do anything to salve your heart when you see Kim Shin in tears. Eun-tak, however, wants to keep her promise to find him, so she rejects the Grim Reaper’s tea which will remove her memories. We’ve been told earlier in the series how denying the tea is a form of punishment, so rejecting it means Eun-tak must endure some suffering to keep those memories of Kim Shin. How romantic is that?

The Grim Reaper and Sunny leave for their next life (Episode 16)

The star-crossed lovers met for the last time when Sunny died and became the last soul the Grim Reaper had to guide. Even after thirty-odd years apart, Sunny admitted in the end that she’d missed the Grim Reaper, and he in turn wanted to do something he hadn’t done from a long time ago – putting the jade ring on her finger properly. Seeing him reach for her hand and them walking out together seemed like a fitting end to their tragic love.

Eun-tak fulfils her promise to find Kim Shin again (Episode 16)

Fortunately for “Goblin” fans, the writers didn’t want viewers to finish the show in tears. A reincarnated Eun-tak finds Kim Shin in Quebec, and their meeting is the stuff most people only dream about. A long-lost love finally appearing again, this time ready to make things work. It’s the second happiest ending in the series… because another scene steals it.

The Grim Reaper and Sunny in their next lives (Episode 16)

Despite the tragedies that plagued their previous existences, the Grim Reaper and Sunny meet again in their next lives, and it is simply adorable. Gone is the nervous “I don’t have a business card yet” Grim Reaper, replaced by a no-nonsense police detective who finds his facade broken by Sunny’s new lease of life as an actress. The scene of her locking the bracelet on the Grim Reaper’s wrist is a great reflect of him placing the ring on her finger in their past, and you can’t help but cheer when the two finally have the happy ending you were hoping for the entire series.
