Joss Whedon Says He'd Be Up For Directing A Marvel Movie With A Female Lead
Two-time ‘Avengers’ director Joss Whedon has revealed he’s open to directing another movie in Marvel Studios’ cinematic universe, especially if it is lead by a cast of women.
The writer and director seemed completely spent after his experience making 'Avengers: Age of Ultron’ and this is the first sign that he may not be done with Marvel just yet.

The Wrap asked Whedon whether he’d be into directing “a female-driven Avengers franchise” to which he replied: “Yeah, of course. Although I tend more towards the ‘Jessica Jones’-ey kind of stories than the delightful 'Supergirl’ stories that my daughter wants.“
Whedon has been open about how tough a time he had during 'Age of Ultron’ and in particular during the editing process. Marvel Studios and president Kevin Feige had to be deep cuts to the film, causing friction.
Whedon told Vulture shortly before the film was released in April 2015: "This was the hardest work I’ve ever done, and at some point, when it’s that hard, you just feel like you’ve lost.”
Whedon has never seemed the type to hold a grudge, and in this recent interview he had nothing but good things to say about Feige and in particular how he got 'Captain Marvel’ - the company’s first female-led superhero movie - green-lit.
"Kevin Feige fought a mighty fight to get her on the schedule. So it’s a start. You could say that should be a middle, but it’s a start,” said Whedon, speaking of Hollywood as a whole rather than Marvel specifically.
Whedon of course has always championed women in his scripts, when Hollywood continues to hesitate when it comes to depicting female characters as people of depth. In relation to Marvel he helped flesh out and lend depth to Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow in his two ‘Avengers’ films. He’s the main reason the character is such a key part of the Marvel universe now.
Whedon also discussed his new script, describing it as "a story about a girl who goes through some unbelievable s**t”. Which to be fair, also perfectly sums up 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ and his feature film debut 'Serenity’.
“It is an original screenplay that is very different from everything I’ve ever done except for that it’s exactly the same,” he continued.
He adds that he hopes to finish the script soon, “if I could just get a little more traction on that third-act issue.
“It’s the first time in my life I’m writing without a sort of studio audience rating — without a plan. I’m just writing about something I care about, so it’s a little terrifying and it’s taking a little longer. But I think it will be good!”
