Before he met fiancee Zooey Deschanel, Jonathan Scott once went on a particularly disastrous date.

During an appearance on the podcast You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes, Scott, 45, tells the host about one ill-fated evening when he was single.

"I was out with this one person, and I’d known her socially through other people," he says. "We went out for dinner and she spent the entire dinner making fun of the strangers in the restaurant. Literally, their physical attributes, the way they were talking, and I was so confused. I’m like, 'Is the conversation that dull that you want to make fun of this elderly couple that’s over here?' It was really weird."

At the end of the date, Scott told her, "I don’t think this is a match; I don’t think we should do this again."

That didn’t go over well.

"She lost it on me," he recalls. "She threw a drink at me and called me an a--hole in the middle of the restaurant."

"I don’t like it when people are looking at me," he adds. "And every eye in the restaurant turned."

Scott explains that he needed to end the night there since his date wanted the pair to continue on to a bar. "It was horrible," he says. "She made a whole scene."

When Holmes asks what kind of beverage was tossed, Scott reveals that it was white wine.

"None of my wardrobe is expensive, so I’m totally fine with that," the Property Brothers host assures him.

During the podcast, Scott also reflects on finding love with Deschanel in his 40s.

"The problem is when you’re younger, you don’t know what you want in a relationship," he says. "And I had relationships where I was like, ‘Is this normal? Are we supposed to be like this? I’m feeling isolated. I don’t feel listened to."

He got to a point where, he says, he finally decided, “I’m not going to put up with that bulls---. I know I’m not perfect, but I’m not going to put up with these baseline things,"

"They’re really not anything other than personality," he adds. "Like if somebody doesn’t respect you enough to understand that you have emotions, you have a right to feel a certain way, they’re either a narcissist and they don’t give a s--- or they’re so inexperienced in love and emotion that I’m too mature for that and I don’t want to be with somebody like that."

Scott and Deschanel announced their engagement in August, after four years of dating.

"Forever starts now," the couple wrote in a joint Instagram post that showed them smiling during a trip to Scotland. Deschanel held up her left hand, wearing a sparkling engagement ring set with clear, pink and purple stones in a floral motif.

Deschanel and Scott opened up about their love story in a PEOPLE cover story earlier this month.

"When we first started dating, Zooey posted a picture of us together.  It might've been the very first time we ever posted anything on social media. And I remember I looked at it and I saw the first comment right below was, 'Why the hell is she with a Property Brother?!’ I was like, ‘Excuse me—rude!'" Scott said.

The pair first met on a 2019 episode of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke, during which the New Girl actress and her sister, Emily Deschanel, were paired up with Jonathan and his twin and Property Brothers costar, Drew Scott.

"I'm not gonna lie, this I did not see coming," Scott said of Deschanel, describing her as "somebody who cares to make sure you get through the hard moments as well."

The couple are still in the early stages of planning their wedding.

“We've just been basking in engaged bliss and haven't really figured out anything," Deschanel said. “We do love to throw a party.”
