28 Jun – Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist has passed away at the age of 56.
"It is with deep sadness that I can confirm that our beloved Michael, one of Sweden's most respected and accomplished actors, has passed away quietly surrounded by family after a year long battle with lung cancer," said a statement from Nyqvist's representative, as quoted by The Guardian.
The Stockholm-born actor is survived by his wife, production designer Catharina Ehrnrooth, and their two children, Ellen and Arthur.
Nyqvist was best-known for starring as Mikael Blomkvist in the original Swedish "Dragon Tattoo" trilogy: "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", "The Girl Who Played with Fire", and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest".
He has also appeared in Hollywood action movies such as "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol", "Abduction", and "John Wick".
Trained at the Malmö Theatre Academy, Nyqvist started his acting career in the early '80s, appearing in TV movies and series. His breakout role came in 2000, when he starred in Swedish comedy-drama "Together", for which he received the nomination for Guldbagge Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
Nyqvist was still active in the acting world prior to his death. There will be several posthumous releases of the actor's work, including this year's American action thriller film "Hunter Killer" and 2018's war drama film "Radegund" and French-Belgian drama film "Kursk".
