John Oliver Recruits Usher, Sheryl Crow, Josh Groban to Sing ‘Don’t Use Our Songs’ to Politicians (Video)
John Oliver took a stand against the unauthorized use of pop songs at political rallies on Sunday’s episode of “Last Week Tonight.”
To that end, he rounded up famous musicians including Usher, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton, Dan Reynolds, Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson from Heart, Cyndi Lauper, Sheryl Crow, John Mellencamp, and Imagine Dragons singer Dan Reynolds to sing a new tune called “Don’t Use Our Songs.”
The parody song makes it abundantly clear that these musicians are tired of having their music used without permission.

“Stop using our music, that’s the one and only rule/We didn’t write these songs to make your campaign stop seem cool,” they sing.
The segment was a response to Donald Trump using the Queen song “We Are the Champions” during his speech at the Republican National Convention, to which the band objected. Another song Trump picked for the occassion? The Rolling Stones classic “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”
“No s—,” Oliver said.
The phenomenon of politicians using inappropriate music on the campaign trail is nothing new of course, with Oliver pointing out that Ronald Regan used Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA,” without realizing the song is about the mistreatment of Vietnam War veterans.
