John Arcilla named Best Actor at Venice Festival

13 Sep – John Arcilla has recently been named Best Actor at the Venice International Film Festival.

The actor, who won for his role in Erik Matti's "On the Job: The Missing 8", could not attend the said event, and had the filmmaker accepting his Volpi Cup on his behalf.

He expressed his gratitude for the recognition in a video, saying, "If there is something I really regret tonight, it is the fact that I will not be able to see my picture there kissing my own Volpi Cup just like the 77 actors who received their most prestigious award in the middle of Venice on that red carpet."

John stated that he promised himself to fly to Venice once the pandemic subsided and to bring his accolade so that he could have the experience in the city.

"I know that we came from different countries and we have different languages and cultures... and yet I can feel the tremendous oneness that you understand me and we understand each other. It's because of the art of cinema," he added.

It is noted that "On the Job: The Missing 8" is the only Southeast Asian film selected for the In Competition section.

The movie stars John Arcilla as a journalist named Sisoy Salas, a journalist who investigates the mysterious disappearance of his colleagues and gets caught in a web of crime and political intrigue. The movie also stars Dennis Trillo, Christopher de Leon, Leo Martinez, Joey Marquez, Vandolph Quizon, Agot Isidro, Eric Fructuoso and Soliman Cruz.

The first movie, which stars Gerald Anderson, was released in 2013.

The 78th Venice International Film Festival ran from 1 to 11 September 2021.
