It has been quite the lockdown for Joe Wicks, who has won praise as the “nation’s PE teacher” for his online home workouts for kids and continued to lead exercise classes after breaking his hand in a bicycle accident at the end of March.

Now, the Instagram fitness star, 33, has been forced to call in a “supply teacher” - his 29-year-old wife Rosie Jones - after he had to undergo a second operation.

Wicks, who thanked NHS surgeons at Kingston Hospital for treating him this week, explained in a new post that he would be unable to demonstrate exercise moves like normal in tomorrow’s lesson.

Explaining his back-up plan to his 3.6m followers, the father-of-two wrote: “I’ve had to call in a supply teacher for Monday’s #pewithjoe

“It’s my beautiful wife Rosie. She’s kindly agreed to come on the live stream with me to demonstrate the moves as I really need to let my hand rest for a few days now I’ve had the wires removed.

“It’s totally out of her comfort zone so I’ve got so much love and respect for her right now.

“She’s always there for me when I need her the most and she knows how much it means to me that I don’t let anyone down with these daily workouts.

“I’ll still be leading the session and coaching you all but Rosie will be demonstrating the exercises for you. Let’s wish her good luck on her debut PE class.”

Earlier this week, the star - whose workouts have raised more than £200,000 for NHS charities - said he was “super grateful” to hospital staff after he had to have wires removed from his hand when it became infected following the first operation.

Speaking on Instagram, he said: "It doesn't matter how old you are, when you see a nurse or a doctor you instantly feel safe and calm and relaxed.

"I think it's amazing, the NHS people out here still grafting, still having to be around the Covid patients and it's just wonderful isn't it, that people are that kind to dedicate their lives to helping other people that are sick and unwell feel better."

On Friday, after holding his usual fancy dress edition of his weekly PE class, Joe went to get his hand checked out.

He explained: “I woke up all night...as it was throbbing and pulsating like liquid hot magma."
