True Detective: Night Country star Jodie Foster has confirmed her future on the HBO show.

The fourth season of the anthology series follows Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) as they investigate the disappearance of eight men from a research station in Alaska.

With the season being the first in the series to bear a subtitle, there were rumours that a follow-up involving the same characters could be on the cards, but Foster has confirmed that HBO will continue with its anthology format, taking a return off the table.

Speaking to Variety at the 96th Academy Awards, where Foster received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Nyad, the actor was asked if she would return to True Detective, but swiftly said: “No. It’s a one and done – it’s an anthology.”

Despite the news that Foster won’t be reprising her role in the future, True Detective fans have been rejoicing since HBO announced that a fifth season had been greenlit, with Night Country showrunner Issa López set to return.

“Issa is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO's creative spirit,” said HBO's head of drama Francesca Orsi said in a statement. “She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision.
