Joaquin Phoenix Rules Over France and Wages War as Napoleon Bonaparte in New “Napoleon” Trailer

Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby star in Ridley Scott's 'Napoleon,' in theaters everywhere Nov. 22

Joaquin Phoenix goes to battle in his next movie.

On Wednesday, Apple Original Films and Sony Pictures Entertainment released the new trailer for Napoleon, which stars Phoenix, 48, as French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.

The trailer for filmmaker Ridley Scott's latest movie picks up where the first trailer left off — with Bonaparte launching a trap against enemy forces on an icy plain. The rest of the trailer, cut to the tune of Black Sabbath's 1970 song "War Pigs," showcases his rise to power in France in the 1790s and his relationship with his wife Josephine (Vanessa Kirby).

In the aftermath of the French Revolution, Napoleon seizes power of the nation and crowns himself emperor, preceding a years-long reign that features diplomatic and military confrontations with other major European powers, including Great Britain.

An official synopsis for the movie touts Scott's "large-scale filmmaking" as the story "captures Bonaparte's relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine, showcasing his visionary military and political tactics against some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever filmed."

Napoleon marks the first movie for director Scott, 85, since he released two films in 2021; The Last Duel and House of Gucci.

In real life, Bonaparte rose to power during France's revolutionary wars and became emperor in 1804. After a number of wars, he was exiled to Elba in 1814, escaped and reigned as emperor again until his defeat at Waterloo in 1815. He was then re-exiled to St. Helena, where he died in 1821 at the age of 51.

Napoleon marks Phoenix's second big-screen performance of 2023 after he starred in the horror epic Beau Is Afraid. The actor has one Academy Award to his name via his Best Actor win for 2019's Joker; he will reprise that role in a 2024 sequel that costars Lady Gaga.

Phoenix and Kirby, 35, previously told Empire magazine that they agreed to "surprise each other" on set with improvised reactions and physical interactions while filming.

“She said, ‘Look, whatever you feel, you can do.’ I said, ‘Same thing with you.’ She said, ‘You can slap me, you can grab me, you can pull me, you can kiss me, whatever it is,' " he told the outlet.

Napoleon is in theaters Nov. 22 and will stream globally on Apple TV+ at a later date.
