Hosting for the holidays can be gratifying, but it can also come with a lot of pressure—even for experts like Joanna Gaines. “With our kids getting older, I’ve started hosting more of the holidays in our home, and I’ve definitely felt that underlying anxiety, like what’s going to burn, what am I going to forget, all those inevitable worries that run through your head anytime you’re hosting,” she tells House Beautiful.

But the Magnolia founder always reminds herself of one thing to ease the stress. “ I always go back to the beauty that it’s family, and no one needs to be perfect,” says Gaines, whose family recently came together to put up their Christmas tree. “We only need each other.”

Common hosting mistakes usually aren’t the end of the world, and it's often possible to find workarounds. “If disaster were to strike, I’m sure we’d be able to figure out some creative swap,” Gaines says. “Plus, we’d have a great story to tell next year!”

So if you’re planning a big holiday celebration at your house this season, keep Gaines’s motto in mind. We’ve also collected recommendations from other avid hosts, including Christina Hall and Stanley Tucci, for tips, must-haves, and holiday decor to ensure everything goes smoothly.
